Bernese Mountain DogBernese Mountain Dog, breed of working dog of ancient lineage; it was brought to Switzerland by Roman soldiers. It is used on farms as a drover and draft dog as well as a watchdog. Jet black in color with russet markings on legs, face, and chest, it also has a white blaze on muzzle and forehead, white feet, white tail tip, and white chest marking. The Bernese is extremely hardy, thriving in cold weather. A faithful companion, it is extremely active and alert. Males measure 64 to 70 cm (25 to 27.5 in) at the shoulder; females are about 58 to 66 cm (23 to 26 in) at the shoulder. |
