Hound
Hound, name of a class of dog used for hunting purposes. Other types of hunting dogs include pointers, retrievers, and spaniels. Most hunting dogs of hound type are scent hounds. The black and tan coonhound, for example, instinctively hunts raccoons, squirrels, opossums, and other tree-climbing animals by scent. A few breeds, such as the Afghan hound, track their quarry by sight.
